Faded thermal print, handwritten tips, tax-inclusive prices, and cropped totals can change the result. Compare every amount with the receipt before bookkeeping or reimbursement.

How does Free Receipt OCR extract totals and line items from scanned receipts?

Use Free Receipt OCR when a photo, scan, or PDF receipt needs to become structured expense fields and itemized purchase rows. Capture the receipt flat against a contrasting background with good lighting, keep the merchant header and total visible, and use the original high-resolution photo rather than a compressed messaging app screenshot.

After extraction, verify the merchant name, transaction date, currency, subtotal, tax breakdown, tip, and final total against the image. Recompute subtotal plus tax plus tip arithmetic, check that thermal-paper fading or paper creases have not distorted digits, and confirm that payment authorization slips are paired with itemized records when required by expense policy.

Use Free Invoice OCR when the document is a commercial invoice with payment terms, purchase orders, and accounts-payable fields. For statement reconciliation, switch to Bank Statement to Excel, or use PDF to CSV for flat expense-journal imports. What receipt image formats are supported?

You can upload PDF, PNG, JPG, JPEG, and WebP files. Use the original photo when possible instead of a compressed screenshot.

Can receipt OCR read handwritten tips?

It may read a clear handwritten tip or total, but handwriting is less predictable than printed text. Always compare those values with the receipt image.

Does it extract every purchased item?

It can return repeating item rows when the receipt is itemized and legible. Very narrow, faded, or abbreviated lines may need correction.

Is a card or payment-app screenshot enough for expense review?

It can provide payment evidence such as merchant, amount, time and reference, but it may not show what was purchased or the tax breakdown. Keep it linked to the itemized receipt or employee claim rather than treating it as a complete substitute.

How can I reduce duplicate receipt records?

Compare merchant, date, amount, currency and payment reference, and look for overlapping photos of the same long receipt. Mark the duplicate explicitly instead of deleting evidence before a reviewer confirms which image is the complete source.
